"I had played my blues harps in Athens, often going to the metro and getting screamed at, insulted, until I had the suss to move away from the pay phones. I‘d go there with a street dog named Cookie. He looked like the Little Rascal‘s Hollywood dog. He was the same breed of pooch and had all those black and white marks defining his fur coat. He had serious instinct and spent the majority of his time chasing motorcycles out in front of a wild little hotel where all of the so called fashion crowd was living. We were in Athens, Greece, a city has that off the radar kind of feel to it. It seemed as though nobody would ever catch wind of what we were up to down there. At least not for a long run of months, like a license to thrill.

The hotel was situated up on a natural bluff of the inner city, right next to a small park, with a bulls-eye veiw of the Acropolis, a couple of miles off in the distance. On one of the first afternoons I spent up there, I pulled up a chair in the shade of the huge roof-top hotel terrase. After twenty minutes had passed, Cookie came over and sat down right next to me, facing in the same direction as I was, like a perfectly trained dog school cadet. I could feel him glancing at me through squinted eyes, but not trying to let on about it. I waited a bit and finally looked at him and smiled. His tail slowly began to flip and flop. I petted him a lot and told him to keep cool, the big QT was the rule of order at the moment. As I scratched my chin, I caught a wiff of my hand, something slighly rancid. I made a fist several times to get a reality check, knowing that the beginning heat of the day would let the ugly truth be known, bad, real bad. A visible thin dark coat covered my palm and it really began to stink. He probably slept under a lot of cars, oil drips and all. I thought of him bouncing through different parts of the city, stopping and meeting tons of street people who had just finished eating oily cans of sardines, tuna, or anything they could get their hands on, then they go about happily petting my new pal, wiping their hands on him. Yeah, I chuckled to myself about it then went to wash my mitts untill there was no more soap."
