"Distractions

What we’ve all heard:

I’ve got no time. No free time in my life, mate. I’ve got too many things to do. I’m up to my neck in work. I’m drowning in emails. I’ve got too much on my plate. I’ve got so many other things to worry/think about right now. I’ll let you know if I can. Maybe next month. Forget it, no way, impossible.’

And guess what? Just when we though we’d get some breathing space, some slack, a dose of free time, something else has come along and become the new bright and shiny great distraction.

I started putting my phone in the other room last week, it had begun to get on my nerves. I’d ignored all those typical feelings, things related to our sense of personal privacy. Yeah, you know what I mean, those feelings. I reckon they were similar to tiny fuses, and the control panel had already blown too many, but I hadn’t smelt the smoke. It was slight at first, like it was no big deal, but those feelings were increasing in volume and intensity, like termites slowly gnawing away at a huge tasty piece of wood, licking their chops and making sawdust out of what you once prided as your solid block of patience and understanding. Yeah, too much sawdust was blowing in the wind.

I ease back into the book I’ve been reading lately. I soak up the words slowly, try to make the book last, stretch it out. It’s engaging and, no doubt, tickles my brain. It easily qualifies as a healthy distraction. After all, I’ve got time, and time’s certainly got me. Fifty minutes pass and I realize I’ve had an adequate dose of my book, so I start to day-dream about how I’m gonna fix dinner, ummm, right. However, I must admit, the hunger bells are only beginning to ping and pang, but not ring yet, so let’s not rush things. After all, I wanna enjoy that walk to the kitchen, it’s worth savoring. Because you know, time’s got me, and I’ve got time.

"
