"Hello and welcome to Rhythm English news update. Thank you for joining us for this first installment. Due to fact that we are located in Madrid, Spain, this first update is dedicated, obviously to the coronavirus pandemic.

Spain Lockdown

The Spanish government has enacted what they call a ‘state of alarm’ which essentially gives the government the right to enact special laws, the most notable of which are the restrictions on the free movement of people in the country. As of today, it is now technically illegal to leave your home for anything other than, going to get food, going to get medicine, taking care of an elderly person, going to a health clinic or hospital, going to work, or going back home. Also another key point of this restriction on the movement of people is that you are only allowed out alone. I suppose the idea is that only one member of the household is to leave for provisions. There are apparently also limits on the number of people that can be allowed inside a shop as well as the time each person can spend in these establishments

Theses measures come on top of the measures put into place only 24 hours ago which forced the closing of all businesses other than, the sale of food such as in supermarkets but not prepared food, for instance, you cannot eat in a restaurant. I did see some bakery type places open this morning. So it would seem that if the establishment serves bread then they can open. This same bakery had a sign that said only five people would be allowed inside the shop at a time. Other establishments that are allowed to open include pharmacies, gas stations, and tobacco shops.

Currently, as of the recording of this installment. It is a very nice day in the Madrid neighborhood of Chamberí – weather wise. There are some people out but for the most part it looks like a typical day in August around here.

Let’s talk about what’s going on around the globe,

President Trump has tested negative for the virus.

The United States has banned travel from the UK and Ireland. Keep in mind that travel from the twenty-six European Schengen nations was already banned several days ago.

France has shut down most of its shops but for the moment no lockdown on movement.

Italy is still under a countrywide lock down.

Australia is requiring fourteen day self-isolation for anyone entering the country.

The UK has advised against all but essential travel to Spain.

Two cruise ships carrying thirteen hundred people are being quarantined near Chile.

In China and South Korea case by local transmission have been falling.

Thanks for listening to this first installment of Rhythm English news update and to all of you out there, be safe, stay well, hang in there, in the end this will be a stitch in time and we soon enough we can all get back to our normal lives and routines.

Take care and stay tuned."
